It’s almost officially Fall! Days are getting shorter and the weather is slowly cooling off. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is important to take special precautions during the transitional seasons of Fall and Spring to ensure good health during the Winter and Summer.
Here are a few tips to follow during the Fall from The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Medicine (Huang di NeijIng Suwen), one of the foundational books of Traditional Chinese Medicine:
Go to bed early and wake up early. Getting plenty of sleep is important for keeping your energy and immunity up especially during this seasonal change.
Be nice to yourself. Fall can be an emotional time especially if you experience grief, depression, or Seasonal Affect Disorder. Making your health a priority with stress-reducing activities like walking, meditating or practicing yoga can help.
Gather your spirit and energy. Now is the time to be more focused and not let your emotions “run wild.” Practice equanimity in your private and public life by remaining calm and relaxed.
Take a few deep breaths everyday. During the Fall, it is vital to keep your Lungs “full, clean, and quiet.” Mindfully pausing and enjoying some deep breaths will keep your Lungs strong.
