In the U.S., about a third of adults don’t get enough sleep, according to the CDC. Tossing and turning, watching the clock, up doing work at 3 a.m. — you don’t have to be included in this statistic.
Chronic insomnia is what led me to get acupuncture in the first place and it’s one of my favorite health topics.
Here are some tips on how to get rid of insomnia for good so you can get a great night’s rest tonight:
1. Avoid caffeine. This one’s a challenging one. However, well worth it. WARNING: When you first quit cold turkey you will go through a drug withdrawal because after all, caffeine is a drug. Headache, irritability, and fatigue are all common side effects of caffeine withdrawal.
Once your sleep is regulated, try adding caffeine back into your diet but only 1 serving a day and before noon. In the meantime, we recommend supplementing with a good multivitamin (purchased from the manufacturer) that contains B Vitamins to help boost your energy naturally.
2. Eat regularly during the day. If you’re eating at odd hours or starving one second and overeating the next, your cortisol levels are undoubtedly spiking through the day. This can impact your sleep. Eating at regular times during the day will help your body keep cortisol levels stable (i.e., up during the day and down at night) and let you finally get some shut eye.
3. Shut down all screens at least 2 hours before bed. Laptop, desktop, phone, tablet, TV…all electronic screens. The light from their screens sends a message to your body saying “Stay awake! Stay awake!” Turning them all off will allow your body to slowly and gently shut down for sleep.
4. Get acupuncture and take Chinese herbs. Insomnia shows an imbalance in your body and Chinese medicine can help. It is one of our favorite health concerns to address. Using acupuncture and Chinese herbs together will help your sleep habits improve naturally and safely without side effects.
We recommend implementing all four tips to see a change in your sleeping habits. If you’re interested in seeing how Chinese medicine can help your insomnia, email us here.
If you have any at-home natural remedies for insomnia, we’d love to hear from you. Please leave a comment to add to our list. Thanks and sweet dreams!
