The Wake-Up Call That Scared the Crap Out of Me
I know insomnia all too well having had it on and off since childhood. It is the very reason I turned to alternative medicine in the first place. I turned to prescriptions in my 20s when I was only getting a couple hours of sleep a night. I had landed my first “real” job as a young adult which was exciting but stressful. And I had recently lost my grandmother who I was close to. The stress and grief had a direct impact on the insomnia. When I took the sleep medications my physician had given me I slept longer which was great but I felt so out of it in the morning. Then, I had a scare that made me think twice about being on medications. After starting a new sleep medication, I was driving back from a job interview in rural Illinois and my vision went blurry and turned black for a couple seconds. Even though it happened quickly, I was so scared. Thankfully, no one else was near me on the road and no one got hurt.
When I made it home safely, I vowed to stop taking sleep medications and look for a healthier alternative. This is when a friend of mine encouraged me to try acupuncture. I started seeing an acupuncturist and taking Chinese herbs and within a few months I was sleeping deeper, my energy was back and I felt like myself again. Since then, I’ve had a penchant for helping others sleep better. All of the trial and error I did on myself and the clinical experience I have in my field … it’s all in the cheat sheet for you.
