This popular trend has been popping up across the nation. Thanks to gaining popularity in the Paleo Diet, this broth is becoming a household name…and recipe. In New York, you can get a cup of bone broth much like grabbing a cup of joe.
At first blush, bone broth appears to be another flash-in-the pan food trend. However, this delightful concoction has been enjoyed for 1000s of years in the East.
Benefits of Bone Broth
Originating in China, bone broth was and is one of the best ways to restore your health using traditional Chinese medicine (surprise!). Here’s why:
1. It’s easy to digest, which means your digestive system doesn’t have to work as hard. Which means you absorb more nutrients so you have more energy.
2. It contains marrow which nourishes the blood. In other words, it helps heal wounds, boosts immunity, alleviates pain and so on.
3. It’s great for your bones…and muscles, tendons, ligaments, organs, hair and on and on. It impacts your whole body and improves your health overall. Plus, who doesn’t want shinier hair anyway?
No Excuses
Bone broth is perfect for people who work all day and don’t have time to cook. This recipe works wonders on the stove or in a slow cooker. In a few hours, you will have a broth bursting with flavor you’ve never experienced before. So worth it.
Bone Broth Recipe:
2-3 lbs. of grass-fed organic beef bones
5 cups of water
1 onion, chopped
2-3 garlic cloves
2 bay leaves
1-2 broccoli bunches, chopped
salt and pepper to taste
3/4 c celery, chopped (optional)
3/4 c carrots, chopped (optional)
1/2 c wild mushroom (optional)
Add beef bones to pot or slow cooker. Add water (add more to ensure the meat is just covered, if necessary). Add all of the other ingredients (except celery, carrots and mushrooms). Cook accordingly:
On the stove, bring to a rolling boil for 5 minutes. Simmer for 2 - 4 hours. Add celery, carrots, and/or wild mushroom. Bring to boil. Cover and reduce heat to simmer. Simmer for 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Strain and enjoy warm.
In slow cooker, cook for 5-6 hours on high or 10-11 hours on low. Strain and enjoy warm.
